St Chad 's Lunch Club

Our Lunch Club meets each Wednesday at 12 noon in the Parish Centre where around 24 people over retirement age enjoy a two-course meal, tea, coffee, biscuits and good company for £3.50. Transport can be arranged for those who have difficulty getting there under their own steam and who live in the Parish. The Lunch Club is run by Anne Wallace and Claire Swan (contact details below) so please give them a ring if you would like to come along.

How it all started in 1984

On 15th July 2009 the Lunch Club celebrated the completion of 25 years of meeting together, with the addition of wine and a cake to our usual two-course meal. Back in the summer of 1984 Noreen Abel, the wife of the then Vicar, thought there was a need in the area for a meeting place for those in the community who perhaps did not have the opportunity to get out too often and meet others. Eating a meal together gave the meeting purpose. Social Services arranged the provision of the meal and St Chad's provided a venue and the volunteers to bring people in, serve and wash up afterwards. And here we are, 27 years later, some of us still doing exactly that!

Lunch Club goes from strength to strength

This year has seen a steady increase in diners coming along to the St Chad's Parish Centre on a Wednesday for a tasty two-course lunch. The lunch club provides an opportunity for anyone of retirement age living in the area to enjoy the company and conversation of old - and new - friends while eating a hot lunch followed by tea, coffee and biscuits. We have the occasional party, not letting any chance of celebrating jubilees or royal weddings pass us by!

We've still space for a few more diners so if you know of anyone who maybe doesn't get out very much and would like to join us then give us a ring (see end of this article). We can provide transport for diners living within the parish of St Chad's, and lunch costs £4.50.

Of course, with this increase in numbers comes more demand for volunteers willing to give up a couple of hours once a month to help with lifts and/or washing up. So if you have a bit of time to spare, do give us a call to talk through joining our happy group of lunch club helpers.
